itamin E is a generic term for a group of related compounds called tocopherols, which occur in four major forms : alpha, beta, delta and gamma-tocopherols. One of Vitamin E's most important functions is to protect cell membranes by assisting in destroying or neutralising free radicals, the unstable oxygen molecules that cause damage to cells. Its beneficial effects are due to a reduction in harmful low density lipoproteins (LDL's), the prevention of blood clots and a reduction in inflammatory processes that have been linked to heart problems.

There is evidence to suggest that Vitamin E improves immune function, particularly in the elderly and protects against air and chemical pollutants.
